“look Just like yo momma”

Look Just Like Yo Momma” by kolpeace

is an installation of portraits created during the artist mother’s beauty salon grand opening in Columbia, SC in 2023. The exhibition reflected the profound influence and observation of nurturing and empathetic women in his life, including his mother and aunts.

This next installation is deeply rooted in symbolism and memory shared with these women and men. Symbols can shape a memorable moment for the viewer to reminisce. The artist uses the spade shape from the tricked card game of spades created in the 1930s in remembrance of banter , grief , and community that can be built from friends/family.

Through video documentation of performance art of the painted portraits the artist expands on deeply rooted memories. This spade symbol creates a happy and fulfilling timeline I’d like the audience to experience with me. From the making of the paintings, stories and homecoming installation I’m saying,

“thank you for showing me the game”.
